How to Not Get Fat in College

The dreaded "Freshman 15" is a fear among most female college freshman. I was afraid myself until I realized that it is completely unavoidable. I managed to not gain weight at all my freshman year, and now into my sophomore year, have lost almost 10 pounds since the summer. It's easier than you think, but it does take dedication. And in no particular order:

1) Get a Gym Membership.

Do it as soon as possible, just making the purchase will get you motivated. A lot of schools have free gyms, but if you are lucky like me, you might have to pay. A gym on campus is a great way to workout. You can meet all sorts of people who want to be fit as well, and you may discover different classes they offer, rather than just a simple machine-based workout every day.

2) Get a Workout Buddy

Whether it's your roommate, or someone you meet at the gym, you will be way more motivated to work out if you have someone working hard with you. You can come up with routines and plans together, and you are much more likely to stick to your routine if you have someone to do it with.

3) Whole Grain

A lot healthier than white breads and pastas, whole grain and "wheat" will keep you full longer. These have more nutrients than processed grains. That doesn't mean rule out white bread grilled cheeses (because those are just better with white bread). Moderation is key. Try to keep snacks in your room with 7 or 12 grains in them (Kashi has great options). You'll eat less to satisfy yourself, and you won't be eating empty calories and sugars.

4)Fruits and Veggies

Seriously at every meal. It makes a difference. If you are getting pizza, try it with peppers, broccoli, or pineapple (or all of them!). Any chance you get to put fruit or vegetable on your plate do it.

5)Have Gum Available

If you are hungry, trying chewing gum before you reach for the bag of chips. You may have simply just wanted to chew on something. By chewing gum, you can distract yourself and go onto other things ( and have both hands available, instead of one in the chips bag).

6)Drink a lot of Water

You've probably heard this about a thousand times, but it's true. Often you are thirsty instead of hungry, and will be satisfied by drinking water. I suggest purchasing a reusable water bottle, one with a filter, like brita, is great. This way you can refill wherever you are, and carrying the bottle around will be incentive to drink more water.

7)Stop When you are Satisfied, not Full

College cafeteria food portions tend to be somewhat large (are you trying to make me fat??) so don't think you have to eat everything on your plate. If you are able to serve yourself, don't try to fill up the entire plate, you can get more if you are still hungry. I don't like wasting food either, but you'll find out how much you should be eating, and will make your plate accordingly. If you start to feel full, stop eating, and wait a few minutes. If you still feel this way, then you are finished. The trick is to avoid the food baby. The more you pay attention, the sooner you'll realize when you are satisfied, and not stuffed

8)If you Really want a Cookie, Have a Cookie

We all know that cravings are normal, and don't go away. What usually happens, is you want the cookie, but you tell yourself you shouldn't have it. You instead have some crackers, not satisfied. You have a yogurt, not satisfied. You end up doing more damage than the cookie would have done in the first place, because of all the substitutions. Have the cookie. Don't have five cookies, but have the one cookie.

9)Take the stairs

Wherever possible. It's worth it.

Elle France Styled by: Marine Braunschvig

I saw this shoot from Elle France on Who What Wear and was so inspired. I think Kate Moss always looks incredible, but the styling in this shoot is amazing. It has the perfect amount of fashion and fantasy. I had to look up the stylist because I was so enchanted. Marine Braunschvig has a beautiful vision that makes every single piece she places on the model desirable and wearable. I am craving the white Valentino dress and I would wear the Hervé Léger top every day.

Summer Shoots

My amazing friend Jordan Star is going to school partially for photography in the fall, and rightly so; he's magnificent. So I thought a collaboration of sorts was necessary, I love fashion, he loves taking pictures, bam. Photo shoot! So we have worked on 3 separate shoots with varying themes, the first took slight inspiration from mermaids, and a lot from dancing. My sister happily modeled, showing off her moves. The last shoot had an Alice in Wonderland theme, using current trends. Enjoy!

Spring Trends!

My friend Camille and I write a fashion column for our school's newspaper, here is the latest!

Spring 2012 fashion has been a time for reinvention and evolution of style. The trends this spring have been taken from the last hundred years or so and given a more fresh and current twist. While some of these trends may seem a little avaunt-garde and out of the normal college student's reach, read on to learn how to wear runway fashions in the classroom.

The first trend is bold or neon colors. This has been a popular trend for the last couple of spring seasons and is growing stronger. Katy Perry and Nikki Minaj have used this trend with their unorthodox hairstyles, but there are plenty of tamer options. If first approaching this trend, a bold-colored accessory is perfect. A belt or pair of shoes in any range of neon hues can add the needed pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit. Color blocking is still in style and goes hand in hand with bold colors. Remember when color blocking your clothes to stick to neutral colored accessories, or vice versa.

Ocean-inspired clothing is a new trend this season, trailing the movements to become a greener earth. Chanel showed a variety of clothing in this trend, including beautiful ruffles, patterns and silhouettes that are linked aesthetically to all sorts of underwater animals and plants. This trend can easily find its way into everyone's wardrobes. Want to add a little more blue to your outfits? Select delicate beaded pieces and flowing ruffles.

Jessica Lomas, a fashion merchandising major at Lasell College, gave some insight on this season.

"Personally, I think loose, flowing fits are key to this spring" Lomas said in an email. "As for shoes, I'll be wearing lots of gladiator sandals, but would love to purchase some cutout or colorblock wedges.  As a broke college student and a fashion merchandising major, the key is to find trendy, yet unique pieces on a budget. This season is all about having fun with your clothes: mixing prints, going bold, and feeling free!"

Prints are a long withstanding trend, constantly evolving and changing to become more current and relevant. Mixing prints is a really good way to be bold. When mixing them, however, it is easy to get carried away and seem a little costumey. Think about proportion: keep larger prints on top and smaller on the bottom, or stick with one simple print and one more complicated. It's all about balance. Key prints this season will be stars, zig zags, and birds.

Pastels are a usual favorite for spring. This season they have been shown in layers, pink on pink, white on pink, and beige on green. Pastels are becoming the entire outfit. If this seems a little too "Easter" for some, they can always be offset by patterns in different colors and darker neutrals. Regardless of how they are worn, pastels are a usual staple for any spring wardrobe.

One trend that does not translate well to college life is the mid-drift. The runway showed a number of models in looks that showed skin from under the bust to above the belly button. Although it looks great on the runway, it is not appropriate for the classroom or the dining hall. If you are dying to try it, save it for going out. A neon crop top and high-waisted black body-con skirt will look striking. Wear it with a boyfriend style blazer on top to show just a sliver of skin.

Pleated skirts are very romantic looking and have the ability to work with a variety of personal styles and types of outfits. While a shorter length paired with lace and pastel colors give off a feminine vibe, it could also just as easily be seen in a more bohemian styled outfit. A maxi pleated skirt can be belted at the waist with a patterned shirt and flat sandals. This skirt can be toughened up with a leather jacket or toned down with denim.

When picking a trend to work with this season remember to keep your personal style in mind and do not get too hung up on the designer looks. Think of the runway as a tool of inspiration to give your wardrobe a fresh look for the up-coming season. The best part about trends is picking one that works for you that you feel comfortable and confident wearing.

Recent Additions to my Wardrobe

I have been dying to use my new camera lately, and what better than to take pictures of some of my latest purchases and gifts from the recent holidays! I only have a few things, but as usual, I only have a few minutes to do this. Enjoy! xoxo

When I heard that Style.com was going print a few months ago, I knew that I absolutely HAD to get a subscription. Of course, it was on my Christmas list, and lo' and behold, it's here!

I was in desperate need of a shopping trip after working for the last four weeks. I went to H&M and after drooling over these for months via YouTube videos, I found them on sale and I didn't hesitate to hand over my paycheck. (They only ended up being $15 :) )
Another H&M purchase. This croc skin inspired bow bracelet stood out to me. It is the right amount of edgy and girly.
A friend of mine recently went to South America and somewhere along the way picked out these babies for me. She knows I love turquoise/teal.
I found this rock/crystal necklace at one of my local thrift stores for a dollar. Not too bad. It sits higher on my neck than I'm used to, granted I tend to gravitate toward navel grazing pendents.
This circle scarf was made my my boyfriend's mother, who has knitted the most beautiful pieces (including another scarf for me and a vest). I finally have a circle scarf that I can wear on a regular basis (not one with lips on it).

Leave of Absence

It has literally been a month since I have last written here. I'm embarrassed. I have however, been extremely busy working and, well, relaxing. I had initially thought that this winter vacation would allow me to blog post daily, devoting all of my time to my online fashion diary, posting pictures (with my new camera) and venting. Alas, the laziness has taken over, and I have fallen into a vacation slump. While it has been great, and completely necessary, it is over. I am ready to get back into a schedule (not classes and homework, but with fashion and...interesting things). I have a million blog ideas swimming around in my head just waiting to be splashed upon this internet page. One of my new year's resolutions is to get organized, so here goes.

xoxo
