Sorcery Style

I have always had a fascination with witches. Who doesn't love magic?  I think one of the main reasons, is their unique attire. The costumes of witches have derived from Puritanic clothing of the 1600s (think Salem Witch Trials). Not all of the Puritans were considered one of the damned, but they all had similar clothing. Some elements of the "witch's" style back some 400 years ago that have translated into costumes and inspired clothing are:

- long, ankle grazing hemlines
- layered skirts
- black buckled hats
- corseted bodices (in more scandalous of outfits, used especially in costumes)
- laced up boots

Hocus Pocus

One of my all time favorite Halloween movies is Hocus Pocus. I have always been entranced not only by their spells and potions, but by their extravagant garments as well. Sarah Jessica Parker's character, naturally, is the most fabulous. The long sheer bell sleeves and corset bodice  add the perfect wicked touch. There are tons of fantastic clothes today reminiscent of the dark times of witches.

For a more modern take on the witch's hat, opt for a trendier, floppier version.

Happy Halloween :)
